Article: Behind our Handwoven Pendants

Behind our Handwoven Pendants

We believe that the objects we live with should carry meaning. Our collection of handcrafted pendants is a testament to this — each piece thoughtfully woven by hand in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, where traditional craftsmanship meets slow design.

Explore the craftsmanship and process behind these one-of-a-kind pieces.

In Yogyakarta, skilled artisans bring our lighting designs to life using time-honoured weaving techniques passed down through generations. Each pendant is woven entirely by hand using natural materials like rattan and abaca bark, fibres chosen not only for their beauty, but for their strength.

Depending on the design, a single pendant can take anywhere from one to several days to complete. The weaving process is meticulous: consistent tension, precise technique, and an eye for balance are all essential to create a piece that’s not just beautiful, but built to last.

More intricate designs call for tighter weaves, finer detailing, and additional time. Some of our favourite styles also feature reclaimed teak tops for a more refined look, each one hand-cut and shaped before being carefully fitted to its woven base.

Because each pendant is made by hand, no two are ever exactly the same. Subtle variations in tone, weave, and shape are part of what makes each piece unique, an honest reflection of the materials and the hands that made them.

In a world of mass production, this kind of work takes time — and that’s exactly the point.
